Frequently Asked Questions

How can a Dog Behavior Consultant help you and your dog?

We are here to teach you how to communicate with your dog, by learning how to “speak” so they will understand, learning their body language and how our body language impacts them and recognizing what they are trying to tell you. We offer you support, kindness, encouragement, progress recognition, and science-based accurate information in our behavior cases. We know it can be difficult to live with a dog with behavior concerns, and we are here to help you fix that, so you all can live together peacefully. We enjoy working with dogs that challenge us and make us think. We don’t judge or condemn any methods or philosophies you may have tried before, but we use only methods that are humane, force, and fear-free. We ascribe to LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) standards in practice, and we follow the IAABC Professional Code of Ethics.

Dog Behavior Consultants (DBC) are uniquely qualified and have expertise and experience in evaluating, managing, and modifying a wide range of challenging and/or maladaptive canine behaviors.

Trainers train for specific purposes, such as sport, obedience, service, etc.

We at How 2 Speak Dog are experienced as both Dog Behavior Consultants & Trainers (please see this article for a more in-depth explanation).

Our force and fear-free methods help to build and strengthen relationships between you and your dog.

  • We avoid using tools that can actually cause aggression, stress or pain.
  • Our programs strive to minimize your stress and your dog’s stress.
  • We address behavior problems using management and enrichment strategies, while working to modify inappropriate behaviors.

We specialize in:

  • Starting puppies right to prevent future behavior problems
  • Fearful dogs and dogs with anxiety
  • On leash reactivity (barking and lunging at other dogs or people)
  • Dogs that have impulse control
  • High energy dogs that need to learn to relax and/or self sooth
  • Rescue dogs with issues
  • Dogs that guard resources
  • Dogs that are fighting with other dogs living in the same household
  • Destructive behaviors
  • Growling, nipping, snapping, and biting
  • Dog to dog aggression
  • Aggression toward other animals inside or outside the household
  • Human directed aggression
  • Canine separation distress

What training methods do you use?

We use methods that are humane, force, and fear-free, including positive reinforcement or R+. We ascribe to LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) standards in practice, and we follow the IAABC Professional Code of Ethics. We believe in using the same methods for you as well as your dog(s).

Why does training method matter?

The difference in training methodology is the difference between the behavior improving or getting worse, being successfully resolved or being suppressed to manifest itself later and usually worse, and the difference in the relationship your pet has with you. The methods we use are scientifically found to yield the most desirable results: saving you time, money, and hassle and giving you and your pet, confidence, and communication skills. These methods also bring you and your dog closer together. You have nothing to lose!

Why don’t you guarantee results?

Nothing is EVER 100%, especially when it involves sentient beings. It is unethical and impossible to offer a 100% guarantee on future behavior. There are several factors affecting your dog’s behavior that are beyond the scope of our control, including but not limited to: prenatal environment, age, health, and genetics of your dog. A competent, ethical, and knowledgeable behavior professional should never guarantee results.

Can Virtual Training Work for Me and My Dog?

Virtual training, aka, distance-learning or online learning, is simply learning from anywhere you have an internet connection. Today’s technology allows you to keep in contact with your behavior consultant on a daily basis for live questions and feedback. Options include video, chat, text, phone, and email. We can modify behavior virtually by teaching YOU what to look for and how to respond. If we need to see your dog’s behavior, you can send a video to US, but normally it is not necessary. Especially in the case of potentially dangerous behavior, it is not advised to try and repeat it just to show us. Any behavior concern or goal you have can be taught virtually. So if you live near one of us or not, we can still help you reach your goals with your dog.
