Holiday Pet Safety
With the Holidays upon us for the next several weeks, I wanted to put some helpful information out to remind us that the Holidays affect our pets too.
From changes in routines to new visitors to longer times alone to new things around the house to new smells and new foods, it can be tempting to a dog that has never had issues before, and it can be overwhelming.
Know your dog’s signs of stress and act on them as soon as possible. Waiting until the dog is out of control is a recipe for disaster.
With the following tips in mind, make a plan NOW for how you are going to help your dog navigate these changes this season, for your sanity and your dog’s safety.
Here are some things to consider being ready for:
HALLOWEEN:
- visitors/strangers coming to the door, repeatedly
- costumes and accessories
- candy and toys
- jack-o-lanterns, candles, and props
- taking the dog trick or treating
- safety around children
THANKSGIVING:
- visitors/strangers coming to the door
- company staying over
- traveling to new places
- candles and decorations
- new smells and foods
- alcohol
- safety around children and elderly relatives
CHRISTMAS, HANUKKAH, KWANZAA, THREE KINGS DAY, WINTER SOLSTICE, ST LUCIA DAY, ST NICHOLAS DAY, ETC:
- visitors/strangers coming to the door
- company staying over
- traveling to new places
- candles and decorations
- plants and flowers
- new smells and foods
- toys and batteries
- Christmas tree and ornaments
- alcohol
- safety around children and elderly relatives
Cheers to a SAFE, Low-stress, HAPPY 2022 Holiday Season
